The official website describes the series as follows:

      Living, isn't easy.
When Haruhito awakens, he's in the dark.
He doesn't know where he is, why is he here, and where he came from.
Around him there are several men and women who have the same circumstances.
Together, they advance forward away from the darkness, and a world they've never seen before called "Grimgar" spreads out before them.
Memories, money, special powers — This is the reality we who have none of those things have obtained.

The "youth x fantasy" series follows Haruhito and his companions as they suddenly find themselves in a "game-like world" called Grimgar and must form a party, cooperate, and learn new skills to survive the harsh environment together.

Ryosuke Nakamura (Aiura director and scriptwriter, Mōryō no Hako director) is directing and writing the scripts at A-1 Pictures. Mieko Hosoi (Shōwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjū, Psychic School Wars) is designing the characters.

Jūmonji and Shirai launched the light novel series in 2013, and Overlap Bunko will publish the sixth novel on October 25. Mutsumi Okubashi launched a manga adaptation in Square Enix's Gangan Joker magazine in April.

Jump Square manga by creator trio began in 2012

The editorial department of Shueisha's Jump Square magazine announced on Thursday that a TV anime adaptation of novelist Takaya Kagami (The Legend of the Legendary Heroes, A Dark Rabbit Has Seven Lives), manga creator Daisuke Furuya, and manga artist Yamato Yamamoto's (Kure-nai) Seraph of the End (Owari no Seraph) manga has been green-lit. The staff noted that the animation studio, the cast, and other details will be announced at a later time.

The Ghost in the Shell Arise: Alternative Architecture television anime was announced earlier this month, and it will premiere on April 5. The broadcast will recompile the four existing episodes of Ghost in the Shell Arise and include two new episodes.

Ghost in the Shell Arise was originally a four-part anime series, helmed by Kazuchika Kise at Production I.G and written by Tow Ubukata, that premiered in Japan from July 2013 to September 2014. Masamune Shirow's Ghost in the Shell manga inspired the video anime. Funimation released the series' first two episodes in North America in a Blu-ray Disc/DVD combo last October.

Series writer Tow Ubukata commented on the new television broadcast, saying Shirow's originalGhost in the Shell manga was "not a classic sleeping in a museum, but a modern work that begged to be adapted for the screen." He stated that the television broadcast will take into account the "peculiarities of the TV medium," and will answer "why the Section 9 members were brought together." Concerning the upcoming film, Ubukata said that it will "deal even more with the past and inner personality of Motoko." He also hopes that "with Ghost in the Shell Arise - Alternative Architecture, I've created a new Ghost in the Shell work that can touch new people, as well as something that old fans of the manga, movies, and Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex can enjoy."
