Namco Bandai is getting ready to bring back an arcade classic with the return of Wonder Momo. Originally release in arcades in 1987, the beat 'em up series is making a comeback with a new game by WayForward (Double Dragon: Neon, Contra 4, Ducktales Remastered), apparel, a hardcover graphic novel from Udon, and a web-based anime series that will stream on Crunchyroll.

The anime is being animated by Graphinica, Inc. (Hellsing Ultimate)), with Yutaka Kagawa (Hajime Ningen Gon, Rainbow Samurai) directing a script by Ayumi Inabe, based on an original story by Erik Ko and Jim Zub. The series will be made up of five shorts that clock in at five minutes each, and will stream every Thursday

One day, a group of aliens planning to take over the Earth invade Tokyo. Momoko, who aspires to be an idol, gets involved in the fight in an unexpected form. Warudemon, king of the alien empire, uses various tactics to hunt down Momoko and the people around her. Momoko has decided to stand up to the Warudemon plain and simple.

Yuka Fujiwara is playing the role of Momoko/Wonder Momo and Misaki Komatsu is playing Akiho/Amazona. Together the duo will also be performing some of the anime and game themes as FUJIKOMATUNE.

WayForward's game will be a beat 'em up in the spirit of the '80s original, and is due out on PC and Android devices this spring. James Montagna is directing the game, based on an original story and script by Montagna, Erik Ko, and Jim Zub. WayForward's resident composer Jake Kaufman will handle the tunes, with Alex Culang providing additional music.

Wonder Momo was most recently seen when Namco Bandai first reintroduced the heroine in 2012 as a ShiftyLook webcomic. Udon's hardcover graphic novel collection is set to arrive this April.

Folklore-Inspired Light Novel Momo Kyun Sword Gets Anime

Kibidango's adventure fantasy of female sword fighter protecting her land

The official Twitter account for Kibidango Project's digital light novel Momo Kyun Sword announced on Friday that an anime adaptation has been green-lit. The official website began streaming an announcement video: "In 2014, the project's biggest mission launches. An anime adaptation of Momo Kyun Sword has finally been green-lit!!! Now in production!"

The story begins with a female re-imagining of Momotarō, a famous character in Japanese folklore. Momoko is a beautiful young sword fighter who was born inside a peach (momo in Japanese). She lives with her constant companions — the dog god Inugami, the monkey god Sarugami, and the pheasant god Kijigami — in a peaceful paradise. However, a demon army led by devil king invades the paradise and steals the precious treasure that protects Momoko's land. To retrieve the treasure and save the people, Momoko embarks on a great adventure with her three companions.

Kibidango Project launched the light novel online for free in the summer of 2012. It features a number of artists who rotate on a regular basis, so there is a different illustrator every month. It also boasts a voice cast with Shiori Mikami, Asami Shimoda, Masumi Asano, Yuka Ōtsubo, Minami Tsuda, Suzuko Mimori, Chiaki Takahashi, Yuki Kaneko, Hisayoshi Suganuma, Megumi Nakajima, Yukiyo Fujii, Chihiro Ikki, Mikako Komatsu, Rumi Ookubo, Ayana Taketatsu, Satoshi Hino, Hisao Egawa, Asami Imai, Wataru Hatano, and Banjou Ginga.

The project already inspired a weekly online four-panel manga, and the light novel's "second season" (pictured below) began last year.
